Acupuncture, Opiate Addiction, and the State of Vermont

Albert Stern

Opiate addiction is a crisis throughout the United States. I have worked with a number of clients who have struggled with addiction to opiate pain medications. None of these clients ever imagined themselves having a drug addiction. These pain medication change the chemistry of the brain. Sometimes even the very strongest encounter an issue with opiates.

Vermont state representative Christopher Pearson spoke out last month in favor of acupuncture. Representative Pearson is working on a bill to have acupuncture covered by insurance companies for the purpose of lowering statewide addiction rates.

If access to acupuncture for pain relief were easier, the need for prescription pain-killers would be reduced. This ought to then lead to less addiction to opiate pain medication and heroin.

It would be heartbreaking if opiate and heroin addiction was the key to acupuncture becoming well accepted. But acupuncture is very good at pain relief and this is an important area for acupuncture to be utilized.

If you know someone suffering and considering pain medication - suggest they try acupuncture first. Even a mild decrease in pain may make all the difference.
