Craniosacral Therapy and Soldiers with Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Albert Stern

There is a wonderful pilot study in the Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies! This study looks at the effects of "light touch" therapy such as craniosacral therapy on active duty soldiers who have experienced brain injuries.

The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center has tracked more than 300,000 traumatic brain injuries in soldiers since 2000. That is a frightening number.

The study worked with soldiers undergoing headaches and anxiety. Two sessions of personalized light touch/craniosacral therapy were provided in a two week period. Ninety percent of the participants experienced improvement!

For example, one participant said, “I feel normal and I haven’t felt like a normal person in years.”

Brain injuries are serious and difficult conditions. Craniosacral therapy is a non-pharmaceutical way to reduce serious, life-altering symptoms. I hope the military will continue to explore craniosacral and other hands-on techniques as a tool to help soldiers with brain injuries.
