Acupuncture and Back Pain - An Overview

Albert Stern

Use Acupuncture for Back Pain

Back pain is one of the leading causes of disabilities and decrease in quality of life. Constant back pain can adversely affect one's life negatively, and slow down productivity. From the moment your back pain problems begun, life has never been the same. Well, it doesn't have to remain that way. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce and even treat many types of back pain.

The Benefits of Acupuncture

Most people that have experienced back pain, turn to acupuncture after medical intervention failed.  These people reported healing results from using acupuncture to relieve and treat back pain. However, how does acupuncture achieve such tremendous results? This ancient method is said to stimulate the central nervous system that is composed of the brain, and the spinal cord. By stimulating this crucial nervous system, it brings about a healing effect from the release of endorphins. More specifically it brings about pain relief for those suffering from back pain.

Acupuncture is a considered a safe alternative to modern medicine. Not only is it used to relieve pain, it can also be used together with other painkillers for more effectiveness.

This alternative medical method is said to also create a relaxed feeling in the patients during and even after therapy.

Acupuncture has also been said to reduce muscle stiffness and inflammation. This is also a factor that contributes to back pain relief. The muscles loosen up and become more relaxed. Inflammation in the muscles and joints are a major cause of pain and can hinder your productivity.

"Tell Me About Acupuncture" - Roger Ebert

Albert Stern

I stumbled across this and found it very interesting. In 2012, less than a year before he passed away, movie critic Robert Ebert wrote an article asking his readers to, "Tell me about acupuncture."

Mr. Ebert had just reviewed a documentary movie,  "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare." In the movie, a man experiences a great deal of pain relief from acupuncture treatments. Mr. Ebert was diagnosed with cancer at the time was experiencing significant shoulder pain. He wrote, " you think acupuncture holds any promise for me?" and "Give me your best advice. Have you tried acupuncture? Has it helped?" The comments are the usual blend of opinions you might expect.

There is no follow up regarding if he did indeed try acupuncture for his pain. It appears he was quite ill at the time and it may not have been a priority. However, if anyone knows more about Mr. Ebert's interest in acupuncture I would be happy to learn about his experience.

More Than 20 Trials Demonstrate Acupuncture Preventing Migraines

Albert Stern

The medical journal Sao Paulo Medical Journal Evidence for Health Care, published a fantastic study about the effectiveness of acupuncture in preventing migraines.

The authors of the study reviewed twenty-two published research papers investigating the use of acupuncture in preventing migraines. All of the studies were randomized trials and followed the subjects after treatment. Altogether the research measured the outcome of 4419 participants!

The conclusions are amazing! The authors state,

"Available studies suggest that acupuncture is at least as effective as, or possibly more effective than, prophylactic drug treatment, and has fewer adverse effects"

"...there is consistent evidence that acupuncture provides additional benefit to treatment of acute migraine attacks"

"...Acupuncture should be considered a treatment option for [willing] patients..."

It is wonderful to see such overwhelming numbers published!
