Acupuncture and Back Pain - An Overview

Albert Stern

Use Acupuncture for Back Pain

Back pain is one of the leading causes of disabilities and decrease in quality of life. Constant back pain can adversely affect one's life negatively, and slow down productivity. From the moment your back pain problems begun, life has never been the same. Well, it doesn't have to remain that way. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce and even treat many types of back pain.

The Benefits of Acupuncture

Most people that have experienced back pain, turn to acupuncture after medical intervention failed.  These people reported healing results from using acupuncture to relieve and treat back pain. However, how does acupuncture achieve such tremendous results? This ancient method is said to stimulate the central nervous system that is composed of the brain, and the spinal cord. By stimulating this crucial nervous system, it brings about a healing effect from the release of endorphins. More specifically it brings about pain relief for those suffering from back pain.

Acupuncture is a considered a safe alternative to modern medicine. Not only is it used to relieve pain, it can also be used together with other painkillers for more effectiveness.

This alternative medical method is said to also create a relaxed feeling in the patients during and even after therapy.

Acupuncture has also been said to reduce muscle stiffness and inflammation. This is also a factor that contributes to back pain relief. The muscles loosen up and become more relaxed. Inflammation in the muscles and joints are a major cause of pain and can hinder your productivity.

October Acupuncture Cadaver Lab

Albert Stern

Next week, I will be continuing the anatomy series, "Beneath the Surface - Deep Anatomy for Acupuncturists."

This is a workshop I organize with Bev Boyer at the Colorado Learning Center of Human Anatomy in Longmont. Together we provide an opportunity for acupuncturists and acupuncture students to explore the anatomy beneath the skin.

The Colorado Learning Center of Human Anatomy is located in Longmont and provides cadavers as our teachers for these two hours. Seeing the body this way has a profound way changing the way we understand and insert acupuncture needles. We will explore sites of common acupuncture points and channels and the structures around them.

Acupuncture "Hailed" for Cancer Pain

Albert Stern

Great article over at about one hospital using acupuncture to help those diagnosed with cancer.

The article, Acupuncture Hailed as a Treatment for Cancer Pain explores how Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck NJ provides acupuncture for patients.

The author includes this great quote,

"[Acupuncture] can really improve a cancer patient's quality of life," said Dr. Sharyn Lewin, director of gynecological oncology at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck. She said acupuncture is very effective in dealing with peripheral neuropathy, or numbness, gynecological and colorectal cancer patients experience as a result of chemotherapy."

I trained specifically to work with clients undergoing cancer therapies. Working with these clients is some of the most profound work I get to do. It is a great honor.
